(1) PhD position: modeling fracture of meta-materials

This position is part of a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, which will support a total of four researchers, and focuses on the development of interfaces with unconventional mechanical properties. This PhD position will focus on the fracture properties of meta-materials. The objective is to develop numerical models of architected materials with interfaces and to investigate their mechanical properties. Different approaches for generating interfaces will be explored and evaluated. The numerical results will then be compared to experimental data collected by other team members and used to study the fundamental mechanisms governing the failure of meta-materials.

(2) PhD position: Geo-energies modelling and experimental work within the EU SMILE project

Objectives: To develop an experimentally based study of the complex interaction between reactive pore fluids and rock matrix, in typical caprocks and reservoir rocks. Data will be collected both in a laboratory and in situ at ongoing pilot projects (e.g., at the Mont Terri and Bedretto Underground Labs, as well as at the islandic CO2 storage facility). The aim is to provide a link between relevant mechanical/hydraulic parameters and fluid-rock interaction. Experiments will be also tailed to link the characteristics of the rocks to seismic/aseismic slip, addressing the induced seismicity issue

(3) PhD position: Adaptive Planning of Transport Infrastructure under Uncertainty

The goal of the research is to advance the state-of-the-art of infrastructure planning under uncertainty by developing new tools and methods for model-based adaptive planning for infrastructure systems. The research is to improve the adaptive infrastructure planning process through the development of future scenarios, the potential interventions on the system, the monitoring strategy and the selection and optimization phase. The main contributions of this research will be: 1) advancing the modelling of future uncertainty, including its spatial distribution and endogeneity; 2) developing top-down models (e.g. system dynamics) and integrating them with bottom-up models (e.g. agent-based modelling) for adaptive planning, and 3) exploring the use of advanced techniques in sequential decision-making, such as reinforcement learning, for complex planning problems to circumvent the “curse of dimensionality”.

(4) PhD position: Integrated System on Chip Design for Tactile Sensing in Robotics

In a first phase of the project you will be responsible for the realization of an analog front-end including a signal source, an amplification stage and an ADC for the capacitive tactile sensor. This comprises the concept, design, and layout of an integrated circuit and it’s characterization in the lab. (5) PhD position: Targeting the microenvironment

It is envisaged that two PhD students will work in close collaboration on the project. One PhD student will focus more on the chemical and initial biological aspects, including the design and synthesis of optimized compounds. (6) PhD position: Machine Learning for Mental Healthy Longevity

As a PhD student, you will make prevention measurable, actionable, and accountable by developing digital biomarkers for healthy longevity. In particular, you will develop a digital biomarker for mental health and well-being by analyzing intensive longitudinal behavioural and physiological data (e.g. data from voice interactions, breathing patterns and other smartphone sensor data streams). Your activities will also build upon our current BEDDABreeze and CanRelax projects. The resulting digital biomarkers will be used to trigger behavioural precision interventions that slow down biological ageing processes. (7) PhD position: Machine Learning for Predicting States of Receptivity in Digital Therapeutics

As a PhD student, you will make prevention measurable, actionable, and accountable by developing effective digital therapeutics for healthy longevity. In particular, you will use intensive longitudinal behavioural and physiological data (e.g., smartphone sensor data streams) and work on a smartphone-based digital therapeutic that predicts states of receptivity, i.e., opportune moments when individuals are able to receive, process, and use support. To this end, your research will build upon our award-winning work (ACM IMWUT Distinguished Paper Award 2022) on states of receptivity (Kuenzler et al. 2019 and Mishra et al 2021). The resulting state of receptivity system will be used to trigger behavioural precision interventions that slow down biological ageing processes. (8) PhD position: Experimental fluid dynamics: cavitation bioeffects

We seek to appoint a PhD student to conduct experimental and theoretical research to investigate cavitation effects in ultrasound-mediated transdermal drug delivery. You will design your experimental setup by exploiting the state-of-the-art ultra-high-speed imaging, optical and acoustic facilities available in our lab. You will support your experimental investigations with theoretical and numerical acoustics and fluid dynamics models based on our existing codes. You will be part of an exciting collaboration with our colleagues at the Lab of Biomaterials Engineering at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, which you are expected to visit during the project. (11) PhD position: MRI Methodology

The aim of this position is to strengthen pioneering efforts in MRI of tissues and tissue components with very short-lived resonance signals. Current advances in this area promise to expand the scope of MRI to solid tissues and macromolecules to which it has traditionally been blind, such as myelin or collagen. Gaining noninvasive access to these tissues has the potential to improve the quality of medical treatment for a range of diseases including multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis. (12) PhD position: Ultrafast dynamics of solids

(13) PhD position: Emerging black soldier fly biowaste processing

You are expected to explore heterogeneous and dynamic rearing conditions resulting in the optimization of higher-value products, for example, melanin, chitin or lauric acid. The objective is to develop a dynamic growth model that predicts rearing conditions for optimal waste treatment and production of high-value products. Ultimately, the findings are expected to increase the understanding of this novel process and aid the development of practical tools. (15) PhD position: Follicular Endocrinology during Personalised Ovarian Stimulation 

The interdisciplinary PROSPECT-study funded by PHRT (Personalized Health and Related Technologies) comprises a comparative approach with cattle as an animal model for the human follicular development. In this project, blood and follicular fluid samples of human and cows undergoing IVF treatment will be collected for the characterisation of the steroidome using an MS-based method. In addition, granulosa cells from both species will be acquired for transcriptional analyses and correlated with the obtained hormonal data and ultrasound imaging acquired in a complementary second project part.

The research is related to the development of aerosol technologies for bioaerosol sampling, detection and risk management. Bioaerosols, including airborne bacteria, viruses, fungi, and fragments of these organisms pose risks to humans. Even minute amounts of inhaled bioaerosols may cause adverse health impacts such as infectious diseases, allergic diseases, and reactions to toxins or irritants. Emerging hazardous components such as antibiotic resistance genes and metal resistance genes highlight the evolving risks due to bioaerosols. Our group is engaged in the development of various sensors targeting biological pollutants, which have strong synergy with aerosol technologies for bioaerosol sampling, detection and control.

 (19) PhD position: Large-Scale Robotic 3D Concrete Printing

Within this interdisciplinary endeavour, you will co-develop methods for large-scale robotically 3D printing with concrete. The project involves designing 3DP concrete structures and the development of custom software and hardware tools for large-scale reinforced concrete prototypes. Your research will encompass design studies, automatic data generation for 3DP, the development of print-path strategies, prototyping, and testing. The project aims to culminate in large-scale demonstrators to be produced in the Robotic Fabrication Laboratory of ETH Hönggerberg.
