14 Postdoctoral Fellowships at NTNU, Norway

(1) Postdoc Fellowship Position:  Novel Explainable Artificial Intelligence Methods for Multi-Hazard Mapping

The objective of the postdoc position is to develop novel approaches for hazard mapping for interdependent and cascading meteorological, hydrological, and geological hazards involved in erosion-triggered quick clay landslides based on an XAI methodology. XAI is a set of tools that help to understand and interpret Machine Learning (ML) models that builds on the principles that can be briefly summarized as; explain to justify, explain to control, explain to discover, and explain to improve. The novel approach will rely on the use of XAI tools to develop explainable and understandable ML models to forecast multi-hazard events that account for interdependencies between the multi-hazard events, nonlinearities, and cascading effects. Conventional ML models are mainly ‘black box’ models where the decision-making process within the model’s algorithm is not transparent. Hazard mapping is a critical

(2) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Mineral resource supply – SO IV-02/22

The selected candidate for the post doc position will work interdisciplinary towards understanding our society’s real need for minerals and metals to supply strategic needs and the technology needed in the energy transition. Further, the Postdoc should assess how, and from where, these materials should be sourced. An important question that should be investigated is what the alternative sources to terrestrial mining are. What potential does e-waste have? Is there unused potential in the historic deposits of tailings? And should we extract from the deep sea?

(5) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Use of AI in Employee Recruitment

The position is funded by NTNU and will partly be connected to a project focusing on bias, discrimination and unfairness problems related to the use of AI in the employee recruitment process. The project (with short title “BIAS”) is funded by the European Union (EU)  and is of highly multidisciplinary nature where the task of our department focuses on design and implementation of an AI-based decision support system that enables detection of possible unfair decisions, and development of methods to mitigate or avoid unfair decision.

(6) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Linguistics

Changes in states of linguistic knowledge, be it in development (acquisition) or possible erosion over the lifespan (attrition), examined across complementary populations and multiple language combinations (variation), provide crucial knowledge about the organization of mental grammars. AcqVA conducts research based on real-life situations, reflecting today’s globalized world where learning multiple languages at various points in the lifetime has become increasingly common. AcqVA’s vision is to provide groundbreaking data and novel theories that will substantially increase our understanding of how mental grammars may vary, how they develop in children and adults, and how they change under conditions of reduced input and use.

(7) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Hydraulic and hydropower structure engineering

The work will be conducted within the Hydraulic Research Group at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering https://www.ntnu.edu/ibm/hydraulic-engineering. The Department runs one of Europe’s largest hydraulic laboratories, the NTNU Hydrotechnical Laboratory (NTNU HL), where physical experiments on watercourses, hydraulic and hydropower structures are carried out as part of research projects, teaching or commercial projects.

(8) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Sustainable Combustion

Carbon-free fuels, such as hydrogen, will play a key role in our future energy system. They serve as energy storage medium and can be produced from excess renewable energy or via carbon capture from natural gas. Large-scale power production from carbon-free fuels is, therefore, desirable, and gas turbines are a promising technology for this task. There are many challenges associated with the combustion of carbon-free fuels; in particular, the occurrence of undesirable dynamic phenomena must be prevented. The successful candidate will develop novel predictive modeling tools for this purpose in close collaboration with experimental and numerical project partners.

(9) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Smart District Heating and Building Energy Supply

The position is linked to the Department of Energy and Process Engineering and the Sustainable Energy Systems group. The group has a well-established expertise in energy supply systems, building energy services, and renewables. Research activities within the group range from building energy use, building energy supply, indoor environment, energy efficiency, building services, control and automation, energy planning, building performance modelling and simulation, to energy storages, etc. The group is strongly involved in the Norwegian FME Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighborhoods in Smart Cities (ZEN) as well as in various national and international projects, e.g. IEA Tasks or EBC Annexes. The group is responsible for the HVAC laboratory at the department.

(10) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Environmental Sustainability Analysis of Land-Based Negative Emissions

The series of IPCC assessment reports increasingly make clear that how we manage our land resources (agricultural systems and forestry) is essential to achieve the large-scale negative emissions that are required to stabilize temperature changes at low levels. Afforestation, biochar, and bioenergy coupled with CCS (BECCS), are among the most popular negative emission technologies (NETs), but the potentials, implications (trade-offs), and opportunities (e.g., co-benefits) of their large-scale sustainable deployment are unclear, and largely vary with geographical context, socio-economic conditions and technologies. Integrated sustainability analyses where life-cycle assessment (LCA) is integrated with land availability scenarios and/or outcomes of alternative socio-economic pathways from Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) are emerging as novel tools to improve the quantification of the climate change benefits of NETs. They are also useful to support the optimization of NETs deployment in ways that can minimize adverse side-effects from increased competition for land and resources, with the ambition to maximize co-benefits for the achievement of multiple Sustainable Development Goals.

(11) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Liquid Hydrogen Technologies

The research will require the use of eco-technoeconomic analysis (eTEA) methodologies to evaluate candidate liquid hydrogen production and/or storage processes and systems in order to quantify their potential economic, environmental, or sociopolitical value of various technologies in comparison to alternative solutions. Key research elements will include the conceptual design, synthesis, and simulation of candidate commercial scale liquid hydrogen production and/or storage processes currently at technology readiness level 6 or lower; bottom-up economic analyses to estimate costs as a function of geography and markets; dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA) of commercial supply chain implementation; and big-picture assessments made within the context of the triple bottom line of sustainability.
