KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden is currently accepting online applications for multiple postdoctoral fellowships across various departments. We have compiled a list of available postdoc fellowship positions for your convenience. If you meet the eligibility criteria, we encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible.
(1) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Processing of lignocellulose materials
The tasks are mainly the processing of a number of selected wood-based highly viscous materials. The focus is thermoplasticity and how the term should be used for highly viscous materials, a work that is intended to lead to a standardized method for determining thermoplasticity of materials intended for lowflow processing methods. This position is part of a two-year project where the first year is the employment at KTH Stockholm and the second year at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg.
At KTH, the position will be in the Division Of Polymeric Materials (headed by M. Hedenqvist) within the Department of Fibre and Polymer Technology. The division and specifically the group of Hedenqvist deals with processing and characterisation of both synthetic and natural polymers and composites. One main theme is protein and polysaccharide (cellulose etc) plastics. The group has also a theme on mimicking nature’s solutions, such as cuticle-inspired barrier materials.
At Chalmers, the position will be in The Rheology and Processing of Soft Matter Group (R. Kádár) within the Department of Industrial and Material Science, Division of Engineering Materials. Current research activities and interests in the group are centered around three topics: (i) field-filler interactions in (nano)structured soft matter systems, (ii) multifunctional properties in nanocomposites, (iii) advanced rheological characterization and rheological method development.
This will be a close collaboration between two groups working within the the FibRe Vinnova Competence Centre. The Centre is a research consortium between academia (Chalmers University of Technology and KTH Royal Institute of Technology), industry and public organisation partners. The vision is a sustainable society where thermoplastic fossil-based plastics are replaced by lignocellulose-based materials.

(3) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Functional and biobased polymer materials
This project aims to combine polymer chemistry, mesoporous structuring, and nanotechnology to meet the immediate and global need for bio-based material systems for better water quality. Objectives: 1) From algal polysaccharides and their surface-functionalized adducts synthesize affinity materials that can reversibly adsorb pollutants, and to investigate such materials for use in water remediation, 2) Enabling and exploring regeneration of developed polysaccharide materials, and 3) In-depth understanding on structural and chemical relationships that affects the performance of the materials.
Work tasks include laboratory and analytical work, planning, developing, implementing and evaluating syntheses and materials, as well as written and oral presentation.

WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science.
Deadline :13.Mar.2023
(4) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Spatiotemporal PET image reconstruction for motion correction
The division of Biomedical Imaging within the department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems conducts research on tomographic image reconstruction. One of the topic of interest is the simultaneous reconstruction of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) images and patient motion during the PET data acquisition, with the goal of increasing the diagnostic power of PET imaging for lung cancer at an early stage. We have now developed a theoretical framework for the above and have an established collaboration with clinical partners at KI/KS Huddinge that will secure access to clinical data.
We are now looking for a post-doctor to implement our in-silico developed algorithms in the typical clinical workflow for lung cancer screening and further develop the theoretical framework of spatiotemporal image reconstruction.
The post-doctor is expected to:
- Implement, together with a software consultant, a pipeline for pre-processing of PET raw data.
- Integrate the forward projector from the PET reconstruction package SIRF (or STIR) into the python library ODL developed at KTH. A collaboration with the main developer of STIR (Kris Thielemans, UCL, London) and with the software consultant in the same project will facilitate this task.
- Improve the efficiency of the present algorithm in order to cope with the size of the clinical image reconstruction in acceptable time frames.
- Explore different strategies for attenuation correction.
- Develop and assess novel and theoretically founded improvements to our framework for joint reconstruction and dynamics recovery in PET
- Develop strategies for evaluating objective measure of image quality that highly correlate with pulmonary lesion detectability.
- Publish the results of their work in international journals and conferences. Since this project is (partly) financed by Digital Futures-Demonstrator projects, we will also aim to advertise the results at some high-impact event.

(5) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Image processing of high-dimensional brain imaging data
Medical imaging modalities such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) often produce complex image data in vector or tensor format, e.g. diffusion tensor MRI, functional MRI or MR elastography. For the computationally demanding post-processing of such data, we use modern machine learning techniques like convolutional neural networks, graph convolutional networks and reinforcement learning. This project will deal with developing, adapting and applying such techniques to imaging data from patients with neurodegenerative diseases, available to us thanks to our close cooperation with Karolinska Institute.
dBRAIN is an interdisciplinary initiative at KTH to better understand neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. We combine brain imaging, machine learning, topological data analysis and computational modelling of biological neuronal networks at multiple scales to identify causal links among disease biomarkers and disease symptoms. This understanding should improve diagnosis, prediction of the disease progression and suggest better therapies.
As a postdoc you will independently develop such methods, resulting in scientific publications and presentations at international conferences.
Deadline :23.Mar.2023
(6) Postdoc fellowship: Machine learning in severe accident modeling and risk analysis
We are looking for a PostDoc to apply machine learning methods (ML) to modeling of severe accident phenomena in nuclear power plants and risk analyses. Designs of currently operating plants, modern small modular reactors and liquid metal cooled reactors will be of interest. The ML tools will be developed and trained to predict evolution of the accident progression in time with high computational efficiency. The trained ML models will be used to solve such problems as (i) assessment of the risk of releases of radioactive products to environment, (ii) development of severe accident simulators and operator support systems to minimize the consequences of the accidents. The work will be a part of national and international collaborative projects. You will be a part of research team with several PhD students and senior researchers.

(8) Postdoc Fellowship Position: Space physics
The Cluster and MMS satellites enable multi-point measurements of space physics phenomena close to Earth. In this project, analysis will be performed of the non-linear phenomenon of SLAMS (Short Large-Amplitude Magnetic Structures) close to Earth’s bow shock. SLAMS may be important for the formation of the near-earth space environment. However, many of the properties of SLAMS are not well known, and more research is needed. With multi-point measurements, we can e.g. investigate growth and propagation of SLAMS, and their role in particle acceleration. SLAMS are also important for the dynamics and structure of the bow shock, and the investigation will contribute to an increased understanding of bow shock physics.
